UNCOVERING THE PAST AT CHEYNES – A HISTORICAL MOMENT!

Our recent work at Cheynes Farm has focused on exploration and gaining a deeper understanding—an essential approach for any historic building. True to the spirit of “expect the unexpected,” this site continues to surprise and intrigue us.

As we carefully uncovered the original timber frame, we discovered a fascinating array of additions and alterations, as well as distinctive Carpenters Marks. Historically, buildings like this were often prefabricated in a carpenter’s yard or at a framing ground, sometimes located far from the eventual site. To ensure the correct assembly, each timber piece required clear identification, which was typically achieved by inscribing or chiselling modified Roman numerals onto the upper side of the timber.

These discoveries offer us remarkable insight into the rich history and craftsmanship behind this project, shedding light on the intricate processes and traditions that shaped the building over time.
